WHAT IS TRAUMA?

Trauma isn’t just a buzzword – it’s the silent force that shapes our lives in ways we might not even realise.  It’s not always the big, dramatic events that leave us reeling; sometimes, it’s the smaller, quieter moments that chip away at our sense of self.  Whether it’s a childhood filled with instability or a series of near misses that leave us on edge, trauma takes many forms.

Feeling threatened, Overwhelmed and Powerless

At its core, trauma is about feeling overwhelmed and powerless in the face of a threat – real or perceived.  It hijacks our nervous system, leaving us stuck in fight, flight or freeze mode, unable to process what’s happening around us, and because our brains can’t make sense of the experience, the memory gets stored away in its raw, unprocessed state, ready to resurface at the slightest provocation.

Signs of Trauma

The signs of trauma can be subtle, sneaking up on us when we least expect it.  Maybe it’s a racing heart or a sinking feeling in the pit of our stomach, maybe it’s a persistent sense of fear or shame that colors our every thought and action.  Whatever form it takes, trauma has a way of disconnecting us from ourselves, from others, and from the world around us.
